Clinical Observation of the Benign Surgical Diseases of the Biliary Tract

Abstract
This study is a review and analysis of 167cases of benign surgical diseases of the biliary tract who were admitted and treated at Department of Surgery, Chonnam University Hospital from Jan. 1970 to May, 1975.
The results are as follows:
1. Among 167 cases, the causative diseases were congenital anomalies; 6 cases (3. 6%), acute and chronic cholecystitis without stone; 42 cases (25.2%), calculus diseases; 93 cases (55.8 %), parasitic diseases; 21 cases (12.6%), and traumatic biliary diseases; 5 cases (3.0%).
2. The, age group of the highest incidence was 41^50 years (20.4%), but more than 75% of cases were belong to the group of after-third-decade. The female was slightly prevalent than male. Seasonal distribution showed that spring and summer were more higher than autumn and winter. As for the duration of the symptoms from the initial attack, it revealed two peaks-64 cases (38.4%) within 6 months and 41 cases (24.6%) over 10 years.
3. The prominent symptoms and signs were pain in R.U.Q. (83.4%), nausea and vomiting, jaundice and fever with chillness, and tenderness (36.0%) in order of frequency.
4. The rate of positive findings were 87.2% in oral cholecystogram or intravenous cholangiogram preoperatively and 20% in T-tube cholangiogram postoperatively.
5. The operative procedures were as follows, cholecystectomy was performed in 34 cases (20.4%), cholecystectomy and choledochostomy in 108 cases (64.8%), and exploration of common bile duct was performed 121 among 167 cases, in whom 100 cases (83%) were positive findings.
6. The main complications were 9 cases (5.4%) of wound infection and 6 cases (3.6%) of residual stones.
7. The operative mortality was 2.4%.
